Callopistria maillardi
TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; ARTHROPODA; ATELOCERATA; HEXAPODA; INSECTA; PTERYGOTA; Lepidoptera; NOCTUIDAE
IDENTIFICATION: Medium moth (12-13mmTL) in varying shades of brown.
Fore wings narrowly triangular, terminal margin with a midway tooth-like lobe; brown with angular shadings varying from medium brown to almost black, and some angles with light almost white margins typified by chocolate brown triangle in middle of leading edge of fore wing. Hind wings uniformally dark brown. Underside brown, hind wings paler with transverse line and cell spot. Head and thorax brown. Abdomen brownish grey, underside paler. Legs and Antennae brown.
GENERAL NOTE: Caterpillar a green nocturnal feeder on ferns. Adults with wing pattern
typical of "subspecies" meridionalis Collenette from Rapa and French Polynesia on Rarotonga but there are also specimens with "maillardi" pattern as well. Holloway [-----,JD 1979: A survey of the lepidoptera, biogeography and ecology of New Caledonia: 415-416] sank Collenette's subspecies.
