General Information

COMMON NAMES: Scarlet Sage, Flame Sage

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Brazil

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers; Potential invasive

KEY FEATURES: Herb/subshrub to 2.5m. LEAVES opposite, wide-oval to 8cm, toothed, without hairs; stalk 4cm, slender. FLOWERS terminal spike, bracts red; calyx/sepals usually red, to 2cm, persistent; corolla/petals tube to 4cm, scarlet, upper lip to 1.5cm, lower lip shorter. Many cultivars, such as 'Alba' fls. white and 'Atropurpurea' fls. dark violet-purple; and several dwarfs.
