General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bunya Pine, Bunya, Bunya-Bunya Pine; German Bunya-bunya

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Queensland

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent; S.Group only (AT only - rare); Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental leaves

KEY FEATURES: A dome-like tree to 45m. BRANCHES 10-15 per whorl, horizontal or arching downwards, foliage in terminal clusters. BRANCHLETS long and drooping. LEAVES arranged in spiral, rigid, flat, to 5x1cm. CONES on tips of branchlets, to 18cm long; erect on uppermost branches, massive, to 30x20cm; disintegrate when ripe.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Separated from other Araucaria by branch whorls of 10-15, large leaves to 5x1cm, and massive cones (male 18cm long, and female to 30x20cm).
