General Information

COMMON NAMES: Hoop Pine, Moreton-Bay Pine

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Paina (AT)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Australia - w. New Guinea

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; S.Group only (AT only - rare); Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental leaves

KEY FEATURES: Dome-like tree to 45m, with upper branches arching upward. BRANCHES whorls of 4-7, with BRANCHLETS in dense terminal tufts. LEAVES base wide, tapering, overlapping, to 1cm. CONES on branchlet tips, similar width to branchlet, 8cm long; terminal, to 10x8cm.

SIMILAR SPECIES: See under New Caledonian Pine (Araucaria columnaris).
