General Information

COMMON NAMES: Sevenstripe Cardinalfish, Sevenstriped Cardinalfish, Nine-banded Cardinalfish; German Siebenstreifen-Kardinal; French Apogon à Sept Lignes

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Ō‘ō (RR), Yōyala (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Cocos - Line Islands; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, reef-flat and lagoon-shallows to 4m. Nocturnal.

KEY FEATURES: To 9cm. Oval with 5 broad black stripes (including topside and belly), alternating with 4 white stripes. Central stripe varying in width ending before tail fin. The two stripes either side of the centre are straight on tailbase converging on inner tail fin. Fins clear. The name Seven-striped treats top and bottom stripes as non-stripes.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Separated by tailbase pattern of converging outer stripes and central stripe without an expansion or spot.
