General Information

COMMON NAMES: Eyebar Goby; French Gobie à Œil Barré

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Fr. Polynesia, Hawai‘i; n. to Taiwan; s. to New Caledonia - Rapa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group. (RR) PLUS:; Marine, near-shore, On silty sands on reef-flats, lagoons and outer reef-slopes to 45m

KEY FEATURES: To 6cm SL. Flat-faced with bulging eyes on top. Creamy with distinctive vertical bar on cheek and over the eye bulge. 5-6 dark blotches on lower sides, alternating with larger paler blotches on upper sides. Dorsal Fins separated, clear with dark speckles.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Eye stripe is definitive within the Cook Islands.
