COMMON NAMES: River Snapper, Mangrove Red Snapper, Mangrove jack, Mangrove Snapper, Mangrove Red Snapper; French Vivaneau des Mangroves

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Īroa (RR)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - French Polynesia; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, Turbid near-shore reafs to 120m, Juveniles brackish water

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food fish

KEY FEATURES: To 120cm. Adult - body bronze, with reddish fins, tail & lips. Juvenile - body dark bronze with 7 broad white bars alterating with fine white bars; blue stripes on cheeks. Scarlet Pectoral fin.
