General Information

COMMON NAMES: Scribbled Snapper, Maori Seaperch, Blue-spotted Snapper, Blue-spotted Snapper, Speckled Snapper; French Vivaneau Maori, Lutjan à Taches Bleues

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ‘Īroa (RR)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Societies; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, outer reef-slope to 100m.

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food fish

KEY FEATURES: To 75cm. Adult - body appearing silvery-blue, fine close scribbly lines on a silvery-yellow background. Fins & tail outer parts yellow. Juvenile - body bronze with stripes of small pale-blue spots becoming lines on cheeks and snout. Dark bar above Pectoral fin. Large white spot toward the back.
