General Information

COMMON NAMES: Slender Scad, Long-bodied Scad, Round Scad, Shortfin Scad; French Comète Fine

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Marquesas, Hawai‘i - tropical America; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, lagoons & outer reef-slope to 200m, mid-water schools

KEY FEATURES: To 30cm. Elongate and round, with one finlet. Metallic blue above silvery below. Gill cover with small black spot on hind edge. Dorsal VIII+I, 33-38+1(spines, rays+finlet); Anal Finrays II+I, 27-30+1. Upperjaw without teeth. Scales on head between eyes do NOT extend past the pupil rear-margin. Finlet is feature of genus.

SIMILAR SPECIES: See Mackerel Scad (Decapterus macarellus).
