General Information

COMMON NAMES: Redtail Scad, Roughear Scad; French Comète Queue Rouge

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Indonesia - Marquesas, Hawai‘i - tropical America; n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia; (also Caribbean & Atlantic).

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, outer reef-slope, ?pelagic, to 350m

KEY FEATURES: To 50cm. Elongate and round, with one finlet. Blue to greenish above, silvery below, TAIL BRIGHT RED; gill cover with small black posterior spot. Upper jaw with row of fine teeth. Dorsal rays VIII+I, 30-31+1 (spines, rays+finlet). Anal Finrays II+I, 24-25+1. Finlets feature of genus.
