General Information

COMMON NAMES: Painted Web-spider

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Australia - French Polynesia; n. to s.Japan

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group only (Rarotonga so far); Land, lowlands - mountains; on vegetation, usually in forested areas except where rainfall or humidity are high

KEY FEATURES: Large spider to 10mmBL, 40mmTL (incl. legs). CEPHALOTHORAX: Squarish anteriorly broadening to pyriform behind. Yellow with thin grey marginal stripe. ABDOMEN: About twice as long as wide, narrowing posteriorly, with silvery spots and stripes, and 2-3 pairs of dorsal humps in anterior half. Ventrally orange with a dark brown median area enclosing two silvery stripes. LEGS: Yellow-brown basally, dark distally. Proximal segments with dark distal rings. Femur of hind leg with a double row of fine hairs in basal half. EYES: Eight in two rows of four. WEB: An orb web, usually almost horizontal.
