General Information

COMMON NAMES: Honeycomb Podge, Palespotted Podge, False Gramma

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Ducie, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to Lord Howe

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, reef-flats and lagoons; In shallow water, a very secretive fish, in coral heads, caves and crevices.

KEY FEATURES: To 8.5cm SL. Oblong and compressed. Brown with pale spots, and darker blotches and network; dark spot (cf. eyeØ) on gill cover. Dorsal with 7 pungent spines, membrane low; 2nd Dorsal continuous with 1st; Pectorals rounded; Tail rounded.

TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; CHORDATA; GNATHOSTOMATA (Jawed Vertebrates); PISCES; OSTEICHTHYES; Perciformes; Percoidei; Percoidea; SERRANIDAE, Grammistinae. COMMENT: Sometimes placed in GRAMMISTIDAE (Soapfishes). Here placed with soapfishes in the subfamily Grammistinae (Soapfishes).

GENERAL NOTE: Rarely seen by divers, but a common fish in poisoned collections.
