General Information

COMMON NAMES: Rarotonga Parmelia-Lichen

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Cook Islands (Rarotonga)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native, Endemic of Cooks, 1-island; Land, coastal, beach foreshore; Epiphyte.

KEY FEATURES: Thallose (flat) & lobed lichen, to 6cm width. Upperside pale grey-green, irregularly cracked centrally. Underside black, dull; pale-brown edges, to 1mm wide, with black 'roots' (rhizines). Branching, coral-like isidia (=asexual reproductive 'buds'), to 0.5x1mm, scattered across upper surface, especially on margins of lobes.
