General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE PNG - n.Australia; New Caledonia, Cooks

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, inland ridges, c.120m; Living more or less immersed in bark (=endophloedal to subepiphloedal).

KEY FEATURES: Lichen immersed in bark. White, forming large colonies edged in blackish parent material (prothallus). Flask-like sexual fruiting bodies (=perithecia), to 0.5mmØ, with apical, or irregularly placed, pore. Spore sacs (=asci) elongate-cylinders; 8 spores each, elliptical, to 30x14µmØ. Asexual spores oval to elliptical, to 20x11µmØ.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Anisomeridium ambiguum, with more fusiform ascospores, is doubtfully distinct from current species [McCarthy 2000]
