General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.America; Marianas; Cooks

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, inland low valley slopes, c.80m; Epiphytic on bark.

KEY FEATURES: Small scattered lichens. Pale greyish-green to green. Slightly cracked, wrinkled and warty; lacking an outer-layer (=ecorticate). Squat flask-like sexual spore containers (=perithecia) are dull black, sparse, to 0.3mmØ. Sexual spores (ascospores) long & thin, to 35x7µm; with 5-6 cross-walls (=septa) and a gelatinous sheath.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Porina cestrensis is known as a species complex, with sexual spores (ascospores) of varying shape, dimensions, and numbers of cross-walls (=septa) from 7-12 (vs. 5-6) [PMc00].
