General Information

COMMON NAMES: Glorybush, Lasiandra, Purple Glory Tree, Pleroma, Princess Flower

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE s.Brazil; EXOTIC Tropics and subtropics.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers; Potential invasive?

KEY FEATURES: Shrub to 4m. STEMS young sharply 4-angled, hairy. LEAVES opposite; oval, tip sharp; to 12x5cm; ~5 obvious longitudinal veins; densely softly-haired (velvety to touch). FLOWERS terminal, 1-few; round, 8cmØ; petals 5, vivid purple; style and 10 stamens purple. FRUIT a capsule. SEEDS spiralled.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Glorybush Tree (Tibouchina granulosa) leaves bristle-covered (vs. soft-haired).

POSITIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Ornamental flowers
NEGATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Potential invasive?. Comments: Naturalised and invasive Hawaii. Does not develop seeds in Hawaii, spreads vegetatively; cut and broken sections readily root.

GENERAL NOTE: After six years growing in Takuvaine Valley not known to produce any seeds nor suckers. [GMcC 3/2001] Known as a serious invasive weed in Hawaii.
