General Information

COMMON NAMES: Wavy-edged Lily, Schizocasia Lily

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE PNG. Cultivated elsewhere (tropical).

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental leaves

KEY FEATURES: Erect herb with sticky sap. LEAVES long-oval, 7-10 paired lobes give wavy look to edge, to 50x15cm; dark-green above, purplish below. LEAF-STALK fleshy, to almost 50cm; markings black-green, winged. FLOWER-SPIKE spathe (=leafy sheath) 15cm long, tubular, persistent; spadix (='aroid' flower-spike) slender.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Philodendrons are similar in general appearance to this plant but are not directly confusable.
