General Information

COMMON NAMES: Variegated Red Pineapple

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Brazil. Cultivated elsewhere.; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Large spiky bromeliad. LEAVES in rosettes; to 1mx 4cm, with spiny tips & margins; edges with broad white stripes. FLOWERS in red heads with overlapping bracts usually concealing tops of ovaries (Hortus:0072). FRUIT seedy, pinkish pineapple, ~20cm length. >>CHECK SUE'S GARDEN FOR LEAF FEATURES<<

SIMILAR SPECIES: Ananas comosus 'Variegatus' has leaves edged with ivory stripes; Ananas bracteatus var. 'tricolour' has leaves striped cream, flushed & edged pink; fruit pink.
