GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Brazil

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: A tree to 10m. STEMS young sharply 4-angled, hairy. LEAVES opposite, oval, tip acute, to 12x6cm, ~5 longitudinal veins; both sides with short bristles (rough to touch); edges smooth. FLOWERS terminal, 1-3, 8cmØ, vivid purple; petals, 5, wide; style and 10 stamens purple.
