General Information

COMMON NAMES: Angel's-Trumpet, Trumpet Flower; German Englestrompete

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Ecuador (ancient hybrid)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers; Poisonous to eat - serious

KEY FEATURES: Shrub to 4m. LEAVES alterante, oval, to xxxxcm, furry, edge smooth to several large teeth, tip sharp. FLOWERS solitary, fragrant, pendulous, large, to 30cm long; corolla funnel-shaped with 5 turned-back lobes, single or double, white (sometimes pink or yellow); slender basal section hidden by green calyx which has 1-2 teeth; anthers 5 separate.

TAXONOMY: PLANTAE; ANTHOPHYTA (=Angiospermae); MAGNOLIOPSIDA (=Dicotyledones); ASTERIDAE; Solanales; SOLANACEAE. COMMENT: The white double-flowered garden plant is thought to be a $Brugmansia aurea@ X $B. versicolor@ cross.
