General Information

COMMON NAMES: Fountain Jellyfish

TRADITIONAL NAMES: ?? (MG)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotu, Hawai‘i; n. to s. Japan; s. to Mangareva.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, pelagic

KEY FEATURES: Bell-like, to 15cmØ, with a fountain of ~30 tentacles on top. Bell margin without marginal tentacles. Ventrally with 8 large mouth-arms, but no central mouth opening. The mouth-arms have ~100 long thin tentacles.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Data not available, but Diplopilus couthouyi is a similar species reported from the Tuamotu.
