General Information

COMMON NAMES: Devil's-backbone

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Madagascar

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers and leaves

KEY FEATURES: Upright succulent to 1m with V-sectioned leaves. LEAVES opposite; lanceolate to 20cm with upturned basal lobes; greyish-green, marked brown-purple beneath; sharp teeth; plantlets within notches. FLOWERS clusters; pendulous, to 25mm; petal-tube violet-grey, lobes 30%.
