General Information

COMMON NAMES: Geiger Tree; German Scharlachkordie; French Sébestier

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Caribean - Venezuela

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food (Leaf 1+) cond

KEY FEATURES: Evergreen tree to 30m with large leaves and orange-red flowers. LEAVES alternate, simple, wide-oval, to 20x12cm, rough with stiff hairs, dark green, base round, tip sharp; stalk to 5cm. FLOWERS terminal clusters, 5-7 wide petals, bright orange-red. FRUIT ovoid, 3cm long, ripening white, edible.
