COMMON NAMES: Bandtail Goatfish

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Rākoa (AT AK), Kawute (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotu, Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to Aitutaki

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, reef-flats and lagoons, over sand to silt

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: To 25cm. Grey-brown above, silvery below, with 2-3 yellow-orange stripes. Dorsals with balck stripes, Pectorals, Pelvics and Anal clear; tail with black diagonal bars - 4-6 lowerlobe and 6-8 upperlobe.

SIMILAR SPECIES: See under Yellowbanded Goatfish (Upeneus vittatus).
