General Information

COMMON NAMES: Caledonian Mitten-lobster, a Spanish-Lobster, a Slipper-Lobster, "Belmaine Bug"

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Papipapi / Kōura Papipapi (AK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE GBR - Samoa - Cooks.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, reef-flat, outer reef-slope to 6m, sides of surge channels

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: To 18cm TL. A depressed paddle-shaped lobster, with small wartlike bumps, and small spines along the sides. Brown with irregular red markings. The flat anterior structures are modified 2nd antennae, the main section (=fourth segment) has 7 outer-margin teeth (excluding apical tooth), each with a central red band.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Parribaccus holthuisi has 5 outer-margin teeth (vs 7) here); Parribaccus antarcticus has 6 outer-margin teeth as does Parribaccus scarlatinus (an "Equatorial species" of Central Pacific).
