General Information

COMMON NAMES: Weeping Bottlebrush

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE NSW (Australia); EXOTIC Widely cultivated.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Weeping shrub or small tree to 8m. LEAVES scattered; rigid, narrow, tip long and sharp, base tapering, to 7x1cm; stalk 3mm. FLOWERS 15-30 near branch end, bottlebrush of red filaments, to 20x6cmØ. FRUITS woody, urn-like, 6mmØ, persistent on branch.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Crimson Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus) has less arching or drooping branches; leaves larger to 10x2cm (vs. 7x1cm); bottlebrush shorter to 12cm (vs. to 20cm); fruits larger to 9mmØ (vs. 6mmØ).
