General Information

COMMON NAMES: Yellow Rain Lily, Zephyranthes, Flower-of-the-west-wind, Zephyr Flower, Fairy Lily

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Riri (RR MG AT MT MH RK), Riri ‘Ōniāni (MK), Lily (PL)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE n.S.America

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens - lawns

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental flowers

KEY FEATURES: Upright short-lived herb. LEAVES basal, strape-like, channelled above, to 30cmx4mm. FLOWERS: STALK to 30cm, similar length to 'enclosing' scape; FLOWER funnel-shaped, bright yellow, 4cmØ; PETALS 6, narrow-oval, 3x1cm; STIGMA short, 3-lobed; ANTHERS long, pollen orange. SEED CAPSULES 3-lobes, each 7cmØ, with 4-7 black seeds.
