General Information

COMMON NAMES: Cockatiel; German Nymphensittich

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE most of Australia; EXOTIC Widespread as a cage bird.

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, Cagebird

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Pet, cage bird

KEY FEATURES: To 30cm with erect crest. Pale grey with white patch on each wing. MALE crest and head bright yellow, with orange patch at ears; and uniform grey tail. FEMALE very pale yellow head and pale orange patch at ears; and barred tail. Fast flight with a "queeel" call. FEED on grains.

GENERAL NOTE: Periodically introduced. Of four introduced in 1991, one escapee survived about a year (pers.comm. Brian Chitty).
