General Information

COMMON NAMES: Geranium, Fish Geranium, Zonal Geranium, House Geranium, Horseshoe Geranium, Bedding Geranium, Zonal Pelargorium

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE cultivar only, parent species from s.Africa

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental for flowers and leaves

KEY FEATURES: Succulent shrub to 1m. LEAVES alternate, simple, round to kidney-like, to 12cmØ, basal lobes; edge lobed, scalloped or with rounded teeth; often zoned or variegated; ~fishy-odour. FLOWER clustered on long stalk; calyx spur united to flower-stalk; 5 petals sub-equal, to 2cm; uniform red, pink, or white - sometimes varicoloured. Many named cultivars.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Rose Geranium (Pelargorium graveolens) leaves deeply dissected in narrow lobes (vs. lobes wide and low).
