General Information

COMMON NAMES: Yellowbreasted Wrasse, Yellow-breasted Wrasse; French Labre à Poitrine Jaune

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotu; s.Japan - Lord Howe

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore,; lagoon - seaward reef to 30m

KEY FEATURES: An oval wrasse to 20cm SL; body darkbrown with rows of small dark-margined blue spots, except lower head and breast uniformly yellow. Sexes very similar. The yellow separates it from other wrasses with blue spots, such as Blue-spotted Wrasse (Anampses caerulopunctatus).

More Information

IDENTIFICATION: 18cm SL. Females and males very similar. Dark brown with black-edged pale blue spots except lower head and breast are uniformly yellow; Pectoral and Pelvic Fins yellow. Large eye-spots on posterior Dorsal and Anal Fins - blue with submarginal black-ring. Dorsal, Anal and Tail with blue margin.
