Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Linnaeus)
TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; ARTHROPODA; ATELOCERATA; HEXAPODA; INSECTA; PTERYGOTA; Coleoptera; SILVANIDAE. COMMENT: Formerly in CUCUJIDAE
SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
NEGATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: in stored foods. Comments: common in cereals, nuts and dried fruits. Larvae feed within the product; adults also attach the product.
IDENTIFICATION: To 3mm TL. Slender, dark brown, prothorax has 6 sawtooth-like projections on each side; antennae 1mm with terminal club. LARVAE white, elongate, partially flattened, to 5mm. Adults winged, but rarely fly.
