General Information

COMMON NAMES: Broad Bean, English Bean, European Bean, Field Bean, Horse Bean

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Mediterranea - sw.Asia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; S.Group only (RR only, rare); Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Vegetable pod (+)

KEY FEATURES: Erect herb to 1.5m, without tendrils. STEM angular. LEAVES alternate or in 1-3 pairs; Leaflets 2-6, oval, to 10x5cm, glaucous, tip blunt. FLOWERS solitary or clustered, pealike, white with dark blotch and a few dark streaks, 25mm long. FRUIT pod, plump, to 30x3cm; SEEDS 1-6, kidneylike to oblong, eaten unripe. Typically a temperate climate plant. Several cultivars.
