General Information

COMMON NAMES: Slender Green Hoverfly

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Cook Islands - ?

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native?; Land, uplands

KEY FEATURES: Slender hoverfly to 8mmBL. HEAD face uniformly glossy gark green; massive red eyes - Male eyes met dorsally, Female eyes widely separated. THORAX glossy dark green with short hairs. WINGS transparent and unmarked. ABDOMEN variously banded black and cream. LEGS pale brown marked dark brown.

SIMILAR SPECIES: See under Yellow-banded Hoverfly (Ischiodon scutellaris). The widespread Melanostoma univittatum (not recorded in Cooks, but possibly conspecific) has uniformly pale legs (vs. marked dark brown).

Rarotonga: ~20 specimens, 1977&1979, several sites 0-100m, Krauss, in BPBM as Melanostoma sp., and 6 specimens of Krauss 1977 set aside with ID as Melanostoma n.sp. by Chris Thompson of the Smithsonian, no date - most have the dark legs (GMcC 5/2004); fieldspecimen+photo, Te Vaakauta, c.300m, 9/2003, GM, ID as Melanostoma based on Krauss specimens, the widespread Melanostoma univittatum has uniformally pale legs (vs. mainly dark legs).
