COMMON NAMES: Madagascar Olive

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Madagascar

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; S.Group only (RR only - rare); Land, lowlands, gardens

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Ornamental

KEY FEATURES: Shrub or small evergreen tree, to 4m. LEAVES opposite, leathery, oval, to 14x7cm, edge smooth, tip notched, w/wo nipple; stalk short. FLOWERS open clusters in axils; cream, fleshy, 4 lobes. FRUIT round, 3cmØ, ripening purple, pulp sweet and edible; seed large.
