TAXONOMY: MYCETAE (=Fungi); BASIDIOMYCOTA; BASIDIOMYCETES; Phallales; o.Phallales
IDENTIFICATION: An erect phallic-shaped toadstool to 15cm with small cap and a lace-like curtain. STALK to 15cm, base 3cmØ, tapering to terminal opening of 1cmØ; white; hollow with wall to 4mm with large cells and openings. CAP 3cm long, flaring, surface wrinkled; initially covered in brown spores, later white. CURTAIN white, lace-like, flaring, 8cm long. PUFFBALL to 3.5cmØ, surface rough, white. Brown cap has strong putrid odour.
GENERAL NOTE: Toadstools are inedible umbrella-shaped fungi. Mushrooms are edible umbrella-like fungi, although the term is often refers specifically to the Common Edible Mushroom (Agaricus campestris).
