General Information

COMMON NAMES: Dwarf Ixoras, Thai Dwarf Ixoras, Chinese Dwarf Ixoras

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Dwarf Ixora (RR)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands

KEY FEATURES: Dwarf shrubs to 1m. CHINESE DWARFS 50-100cm, developed in Europe and introduced to Hawaii in 1950s; LEAVES ovate. FLOWERS red, orange, pink, yellow, to white. THAI DWARFS, from introduced from Singapore to Hawaii 1977, to 50cm; LEAVES small, narrow ovate, tip sharp, dark green; FLOWERS dense clusters to 5cmØ, originally pale tangerine; now red, orange, pink, yellow, to white. Horace Clay (1978) suggested that the larger dwarfs were Chinese Ixoras (Ixora chinensis), and that the smaller dwarfs were related to the former.

Scientific Taxonomy

Ixora Dwarfs
TAXONOMY: PLANTAE; ANTHOPHYTA (=Angiospermae); MAGNOLIOPSIDA (=Dicotyledones); ASTERIDAE; Rubiales; RUBIACEAE. COMMENT: Hybrids of unknown parentage; although the larger and earlier Chinese Dwarfs probably involved Ixora chinensis.
