General Information

COMMON NAMES: Bougainvillea

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Brazil; EXOTIC EXOTIC circumtropical

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Not naturalised; Land, lowlands, gardens

KEY FEATURES: A climbing shrub of numerous varieties. STEMS hairy. SPINES strong and hairy. LEAVES alternate, dull and hairy, wide-oval with tip acute. BRACTS red, dark pink or purple. FLOWER TUBE strongly 4-angled, with straight hairs to 1mm.

SIMILAR SPECIES: See under Bougainvillea Xbuttiana.
