SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
NEGATIVE SIGNIFICANCE: pathogen on Pawpaw. Comments: This virus devastated the Papaya industry of Hawai‘i, although the industry re-emerged in the 1990s with plants genetically modified for virus-resistance. First recorded on a plant on Rarotonga in June 2004.

Vouchers & References

Vouchers:
Rarotonga found on one Pawpaw tree, June 2004, ID R.Davis (SPC virologist), MoA destroyed the tree and sprayed the area for aphids (CINews 26/June/2004), noted that this virus spreads only via seeds and seedlings and NOT by fruit. CINews (24/July/2006) declared Rarotonga free of the virus because of the initial prompt action. However the cucurbit-form is common on watermelon adn pumpkin relatives, and could mutate again into the papaya-form, therefore planters should NOT interplant cucurbits with Pawpaw.
