General Information

COMMON NAMES: Crown Toby, Crowned Sharpnose Puffer, Three-barred Puffer, Three-barred Toby, Four-barred Toby

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Cooks (abs. Fr.Polynesia), Hawai‘i; n. to s.Japan; s. to NSW

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, near-shore, 10-80m; usually over open sand or rubble

KEY FEATURES: To 10cmSL. White with four dark saddles (including one on the head) with yellow and blue markings on edges, and separated by three white bars. Blue lines around teh eyes and blue spots on face; and small yellow spots on lower sides and tail.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Black-saddled Toby (Canthigaster valentini) has the 2 central saddles extending well below the Pectoral Fin base (vs. to lower base of fin).
