General Information

COMMON NAMES: Blackfin Barracuda, Dark-finned Sea-pike, Military Seapike

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Wono (PK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Tuamotu; Panama; n. to Micronesia; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - unrecorded; N.Group (PK, ?); Marine, pelagic

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Food

KEY FEATURES: A large barracuda, to 150cmSL. Dark above, silvery below; dark bars, 18-23, curved, long from upper dorsal to lower ventral. Dorsal Fins and tail black, without white tips; Anal black with 1-2 posterior rays white. Inside mouth black, teeth erect (not slanded backwards). 1st gill arch rough, without rakers.
