General Information

COMMON NAMES: Ariomma

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Palu Ava (PK)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, pelagic deep (Epipelagic)

KEY FEATURES: Elongate, torpedo-shaped fish, with scales in longitudinal rows. Dark grey above, with silvery sides.Separate dorsal fins, and tail-stalk has two oblique lateral-keels on each side.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Ariomma evermanni has less than 45 LL scales (vs. more than 50 LL scales); to around 60cmSL.

Pukapuka: fieldspecimen+photo, 3/2004, K.Salisbury, tentative ID as Ariomma brevimanus by Rudie Kuiter 12/2004, tentatively confirmed Peter Last 1/2005, "Looks like Ariomma brevimanus based on ca 50 LL scales or more (although difficult to count from photo). Ariomma evermanni is the other possibility (fewer than 45 LL scales)"; and M.Francis counted 52 LL scales.
