General Information

COMMON NAMES: a hooked squid

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - so far Rarotonga only; Marine, Oceanic

KEY FEATURES: Large, thick-set squid, 140cmTL. COLOUR reddish-brown, with pale rings 5mmØ (?sucker scars). BODY 85cmL; MANTLE 46cmØ, 41cm to fins; FINS 44x43cm(LxW), front rounded, rear concave and tapering into a slender tail; anterodorsal chitinous flag 3x2.5cm(LxW). EYES large (absent in specimen), rim dark, with rounded anterior flap. ARMS 8, 40-45cmL, suckers in 2 rows; I, II and IV thick, wide-triangular; III narrow-triangular 1x5cm, with centrodorsal flap; sucker rings smooth. TENTACLES 2, only basal section present.
