General Information

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Australia - New Zealand; EXOTIC EXOTIC Rarotonga (1899)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; S.Group only (Rarotonga only, 1899, new search required); Land, mountains (mid-elev.); eastern slope of Raemaru (1899)

KEY FEATURES: Upright shrub to 4m. LEAVES along branchlets, slender, to 10x1.5mm, tip tapering and sharp, base tapering; stalkless, with dark joint. FLOWERS small; petals white. FRUITS woody, subspherical, 6mmØ x 4mmHigh, top half with 5 segments.

Rarotonga: specimens with ripe fruits, 1899, T.Cheeseman, "Several clumps on the south-eastern slopes of Maungaroa [probably Raemaru], far from all cultivation. Doubtless introduced, but I could obtain no evidenece of this" [in Flora], ID as Leptospermum scoparium, and "apparently truly wild" [in fieldnotes].
