Toxocara canis (Werner, 1782)
SYNONYMS: Lumbricus canis Werner, 1782; Ascaris vulpis Frolich, 1789; Ascaris triquetra Schrank, 1790

TAXONOMY: ANIMALIA; NEMATODA; SECERNENTEA (=Phasmidia); Ascaridida; ASCARIDIDAE

GENERAL NOTE: In 2005 vets Morven McGregor and Carolyn Todd (see Special Reference) reported for Rarotonga: "Of the animals studied, 58% had a worm burden and there was a degree of immunity in older dogs with younger animals having higher burdens. Burdens ranged from 0-35,700epg for Ancylostoma spp., 0-8,700 for Toxocara spp., 0-1,950 for Toxacaris spp. and 0-550 for Tricuris spp. Whilst some of these burdens seem to be significant numerically, none of the animals sampled showed overt signs of endoparasitism such as coughing, ill-thrift, weight loss or diarrhoea. The results were widely published across the island in an effort to educate locals about the importance of worming dogs for both their own health and that of the dog."
