General Information

COMMON NAMES: Red Basket-fungus

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE tropical Pacific or Cooks

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native or Introduced Recent and naturalised; S.Group only (Atiu only); N.Group absent; Land, rotting vegatation

KEY FEATURES: A red basket-fungus, c.12x6cm. EGG-SHELL (=volva) cream. FRUITING-BODY (=sporocarp) red cage of thick interconnected arms; tubes in arms unknown. SPORE-BODIES (=glebifers) not recorded. Clathrus oahuensis is white. The Atiu fungus might be a red form or a new species (pers.comm. Ross Beever).
