General Information

COMMON NAMES: Black Wattle, Black Wattle, Earleaf Acacia, Darwin Black Wattle; German Akazien

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ākasia (RR)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Australia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, lowlands - mountains (+++)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Forestry

KEY FEATURES: A spreading tree to 25m. LEAVES (=phyllodes) narrow-oval crescent-shaped, tapering, ends sharp, 15x3cm. FLOWERS many on short spike; small, buttonlike, yellow. FRUITS 6x2cm, strongly curved (ear-like), outer edge very wavy; ripens brown, splits along outer edge; ±10 seeds. SEEDS flat-oval, black, 5x4mm; with orange thread attached.
