General Information

COMMON NAMES: Mangium, Mange, Forest Mangrove; German Akazien

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Ākasia (RR), ‘Akātia (AT), ‘Ākātia (MK)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Australia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; S.Group - common; N.Group - rare; Land, lowlands - mountains (++++)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Forestry

KEY FEATURES: A tree to 20m, but shrubby on poor soil. TRUNK straight, bark rought, orange-brown. BRANCH tips stronly angled. MATURE LEAVES (=phyllodes) oval, to 20x8cm, with 4-5 longitudinal veins; stalk short and thick. FLOWERS yellow, many on 10cm spike. FRUIT slender, to 50x4mm, curled into a ball. SEEDS flat and black. Roots inoculated with a Rhizobium.
