SIGNIFICANCE NOTES -
POSITIVE SIGNIFICANCE: Food (Fruit 0+). Comments: Pineapples have been grown in the Cook Islands since soon after the Missionaries arrived. The Ripley Queen was introduced to Mangaia from Queensland in 1946 and formed the major export industry from 1949 to 1957. It was introduced to Atiu in 1950 for a local-sale industry. The Sooth Cayenne was introduced to Mangaia from hawai'i and Australia in 1960 to supply the canning factory in Rarotonga which opened in 1961. Atiu join the supply industry in 1970 also with Smooth Cayenne. [GMcC 11/2003]
