General Information

COMMON NAMES: Chaff-flower Weed, Achyranthes Weed

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Tumu ‘Enua (MG), Kōpū Varu (MK), Piripiri (MT); Other Polynesian - Tamatama (TON), Lau Tamatama (SAM)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE se.Asia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Introduced - Recent, Naturalised; Land, lowlands

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: Medicine; Weed - minor

KEY FEATURES: An erect or sprawling woody herb to 2m. LEAVES opposite, oval, 15cm, tapering base, few to moderate minute stiff hairs, petiole to 2.5cm. FLOWERS terminal spike to 45 cm; 7mm long, green. FT ovoid, 3mm, 1-seeded.
