General Information

COMMON NAMES: Allophylus

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE Malesia - Societies - Marquesas

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Land, mountains (+++) (from near sea level)

SIGNIFICANCE LIST: None recorded

KEY FEATURES: A slender tree to 15m. LEAVES: alternate; green; compound (three leaflets) LEAFLETS: oval (wider to the tip); low-toothed edges; drawn out tip; terminal leaflet - to 10x8cm [LxW]; laterals - slightly smaller; long leaf stalk. FLOWERS: arising at leaf bases; open clusters; unisexual; white; very small (±2mmØ). FRUITS: clusters; egg-shaped; orange to bright red when ripe; (±1cm [L]).

SIMILAR SPECIES: Bishofia javanica is disinguished by its small, round, brown fruits and its pinkish bark forming thin flakes - Allophylus has pale bark forming thick flakes. In addition, the central leaflet-stalk of Bishofia leaves is distinctly longer than the two on either side, while all three leaflet-stalks of Allophylus leaves are equally short.
